This story is based on the true story of the Pook family who lived in a remote area of the Kaipara Harbour in the 1920's. The story begins Tom's parents go away for a weeks holiday to finally get married they leave 14 year old Tom  in charge of his seven younger brothers and sisters. He must ensure all the daily chores are done and keep the family fishing business going as well as looking after the younger children with the help of his 10 year old sister Mary. This story gives an insight into life in  the not so distant past that will astonish kids of today.
